CHAPTER 3
1. In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2. And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4. And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5. Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6. And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
NOTE
John the Baptist preached repentance, confession of sins, and baptism as the way to prepare ourselves for the kingdom of heaven. Still today, we must listen to God’s prophets, willingly change our behavior, and follow Jesus.

READ STORY | HARRY’S GOOD FORTUNE
Harry stopped running so he could catch his breath while still keeping sight of the small gray MOUSE as it darted along the sunlit path. Assuming that the mouse was enjoying this game, Harry didn’t understand how frightened the little animal was. To Harry, this was just a way of having fun. He didn’t once consider the possibility that this felt like a life-or-death drama for the mouse.
Soon, after catching his breath, Harry again took up the chase. The small patch of weeds at the side of the trail provided the mouse only temporary cover until Harry’s approach again caused him to dash off for a more secure hiding place.
Suddenly, a huge RATTLESNAKE struck from the dark shadows along the trail. Harry leapt backwards to avoid it’s deadly poison. His scrambling feet kicked up such a cloud of dust that at first he couldn’t see, and then with eyes filled with fear, he strained to see if the poisonous snake was coming after him.
Once satisfied he was safe, his concentration turned to read his mind for pain. Did it bite me? he thought to himself. The rattlesnake was so close. How could it have missed? That’s when he saw his good fortune. There, motionless before the recoiled snake, lay the small gray mouse. The snake hadn’t missed!
PONDER | ANSWER
The death of the mouse perhaps saved Harry’s life. Very often, our good fortune comes from someone else’s loss.
When a person chooses to give up something of value for something of greater value, it’s called a sacrifice. Some dwell on what is being lost, while others focus on what is being gained.
Examples of sacrifice include a mother giving birth, farmland being prepared for the next generation, a soldier fighting and dying for freedom, and ancestors keeping a journal.
QUESTIONS
- What sacrifices have been made for you?
- What can you do to show your appreciation?
- Commitment: I will express my appreciation to someone who has made a sacrifice for me.

CHAPTER 3
7. But when he [John the Baptist] saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8. Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9. And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
NOTE
Parents and prophets may warn you to do what is right but only you can choose to listen and do what they tell you.
PONDER | ANSWER
A habit is a behavior that doesn’t require conscious effort to perform. Habits develop slowly. When habits are formed in our youth, they often stay with us for the rest of our life.
Many habits prove to be good for us, yet some, prove to be harmful. Good habits remain true servants. Bad habits become demanding masters we call addictions.
Tying our shoelaces becomes a good habit and we appreciate not thinking about each loop of the string. On the other hand, bad habits can destroy our happiness and even our life.
Healthy habits include: pondering the words of a hymn, praying often, reading scriptures, keeping a journal, choosing to be cheerful, and helping others.
During the next 10 days, you will record your progress on the Healthy Personal Behavior Pattern chart.
Make a COMMITTMENT to complete THE 10 DAY CHALLENGE!
